Qanat

Poster Design

This was an experimental piece, a course assignment, we were assigned to choose a foreign or local script and using its letters, create a poster translating our emotions on the script. I choose ge'ez, the official script for Amharic (Ethiopian language) and Tigrinya (Eritrean language). Created by the Amhara ethnic group (the tribe I belong to) Qanat are secular musical scales. One of the qanat scales is Tizita, very popular in Ethiopia. I tried to translate the musical aspect of the story behind my ethnic group, by using parts of the letters and morphing them to look like musical notes. Because Ethiopia and this genre of music is tied with jazz, I wanted to translate one of the most significant eras of such genre. The 1920/30s; using geometric shapes and muted colours, helped me to do so.
